A Valentine's Day Poem
Once upon a time there was
a high school girl
Who felt average and clumsy
and dull but
in reality was quite lovely.
She moved out
of her mother's house
to live with her father
up north. For a time
she thought it was a
pitiful mustake because
she just didn't fit in.
Then she enrolled in biology
And her whole life changed.
She was seated with a
mysteriously captivating
lab partner. Immediately
she decided that it would be fun
to learn anatomy with that
specimen around.
At first she thought
he hated her
because he wore a face of
revulsion as she first sat down.
Later he told her
he was irritated by her
strong, sweet smell--she did recall
having put on a lot of
perfume that day.
Still, something was strange.
She tried to befriend him but
he pushed her away.
He knew that bad things could happen
if he got too close to this beautiful girl.
Yet still she persisted.
One day, while wandering in
a distant city far from the
safety of her small town home,
the girl found herself
the near victim of a brutal
attack. She knew that she
was going to die and then
she heard the engine roar of
a silver Volvo.
Blazing with fury, he said
"Get in" and it was all
he could do to prevent himself
from tearing these men apart.
Driving much faster than
safe or legal, he told her
that he had followed her
because he had had a feeling
that she might be
reckless. He apologized
profusely for being
so cold to her before
and said that he hadn't wanted
to tempt himself--after all, she was
the prettiest girl
he had ever seen.
But he had decided
he was strong enough
to fight temptation and asked her
to go out with him.
She agreed, and he pulled over.
"I want to try something."
They each climbed out and
stood next to the
rear bumper. He took her
hand in his--They were
ice cold. She shivered.
"Poor circulation," he shrugged.
He cupped her face with his palm,
took a deep breath,
and kissed her.
It was the most amazing kiss she'd
ever had. It was as if
electricity flowed between their lips.
Waves of passion rocked her in his arms
and he moved as if he could
read her mind. As she kissed him,
she knew that what they had, though
they barely knew each other,
was true love. She knew
she never wanted that kiss to end.
He pulled away with
a smug expression on his face.
"I did it," he smirked.
She looked at his beautiful face
into his yellow-golden eyes.
She wanted him, all
of him, that very instant, as
she looked into those mysterious
topaz-colored eyes. "Huh?"
He smiled dazzlingly and said,
"I didn't ask for more than
a kiss. I come from a very
morally upright family and I
do not want to have sex before
I get married. When I first saw
you, I thought you might make me
break my vow of abstinence,
which is why I was so
short with you before. But
look! That was the most amazing kiss
and I'm not even asking for more."
Her brow furrowed. No more
of that wonder she had
just experienced, unless she
married him?
She sighed with chagrin.
This couldn't be true.
She couldn't accept it.
"Wait," she said slowly.
"So you're not a vampire?"
He looked taken aback.
"What? Of course not. Vampires
don't exist."
So she dumped him.
Happy Valentine's Day!
